Today Apple had their big iPhone SDK press release. They opened up the phone and added a bunch of Enterprise features that many small to large corporate customers have been asking for. But they still haven’t implemented the features I am looking for in a smart phone, and until they do, they will not see my money.
Microsoft Exchange Direct Push
- Tethering
- 3G Network (I currently use Verizon)
I know #2 will be coming, if not through Apple somebody else will do it, since Apple has unlocked the iPhone to developers. However #3 is the one that I may have to wait for Verizon to switch to GSM in the distant future. Other than my last 2 requirements I am sold on the iPhone.

Since my last article I have updated the OS on my cell phone to AKU 3 for Windows Mobile 5.0. This has been a huge productivity increase, since there is no longer a need to have a modem driver, and you can browse the internet and take calls on your cell phone at the same time.
Requirements:
- A Windows Mobile 5.0 or 6.0 device.
- Active Sync 4.2 or greater for Windows XP or Windows Mobile Device Center for Windows Vista.
USB Internet Sharing:
- Open the Internet Sharing application under Programs.
- In the PC Connection drop down select USB.
- In the Network Connection drop down select the network connection for your cell phone provider. (i.e. Verizon Wireless)
- Press Connect in the bottom left.
- Plug your device in to your computer using a USB cable.
- You will then see your Status at the top change to Connected.
Bluetooth Internet Sharing:
I am going to assume that you already have your Bluetooth device paired to your computer. If you don’t know how to do this please check the manual for your specific phone.
- Open the Internet Sharing application under Programs.
- In the PC Connection drop down select Bluetooth PAN.
- In the Network Connection drop down select the network connection for your cell phone provider. (i.e. Verizon Wireless)
- Press Connect in the bottom left.
- Plug your device in to your computer using a USB cable.
- Setup a PAN (Personal Area Network) on your computer, again please search the internet or look through your manual on how to do this, because it varies from cell phone to cell phone and Windows XP and Windows Vista.
- You will then see your Status at the top change to Connected.
This is a great new feature that the Windows Mobile Team has included in the Windows Mobile OS. Not only can you now use your phone while you are browsing the web, but you don’t have to go through the hassle of trying to find a modem driver and then setting up a dial up connection and typing #777 and on and on and … you get the idea. I hope you find this useful, and as always please leave a comment telling me if this works or doesn’t for you.

When Windows Vista first came out nearly 3 months ago, I had a difficult time getting my XV-6700 PDA Phone from Verizon to connect to my laptop as a CDMA Modem. After much searching and reading of Microsoft KB articles I realized this driver had been floating around the Smartphone world since 2002. However Microsoft had changed the way they wanted winmodem drivers written around the time of Windows XP SP1, however Windows XP was still backwards compatible. However when Windows Vista was released they made the new driver format the rule, and thus the reason the 7 year old driver will not work.
So after I understood the problem I set out to change the driver based on this KB837637 article from Microsoft. And the follow picture shows how easy in the changes were to make the driver fully Windows Vista complaint.

So after the work I have done, which you can imagine it was mostly reading and understanding of the problem, I am giving this driver way free to my readers and anybody else who would like it. I provide no warranty or support for the above driver.

If you need help getting this driver to work with your Cell Phone, please check out the great articles from Engadget. They are Verizon and Sprint (CDMA) specific but should easily translate to Cingular and other GSM providers.
Update: This driver was originally made by HTC, however there should be nothing preventing your from using it with other PDA devices that use the Pocket PC winmodem program.
