iTunes 7.7 + Windows Vista x64 == OK

iTunes 7.7 has been released!

Windows Vista x64

I am happy to announce that iTunes 7.7 and Windows Vista x64 work well together. The Apple downloader even chooses the correct 64-bit version of iTunes through every browser that I have tried, so they obviously fixed something where you don’t need to download iTunes through the 64-bit version of IE. No word yet if the iPhone 2.0 or 1.0 will work with the 64-bit version of windows.

Whats New?

As far as I can see nothing is really new with the application.  The only noticeable things is that the “Games” menu item has now been changed to “Applications”.  So if you were expecting a huge jump forward in functionality you are going to be bummed.  Most of the changes probably went to support their new Mobile Me platform, push applications, and the iPhone 2.0.

Download

You can download iTunes in the normal places, either through your updator or from their website.  My recommendation is to wait to see, if you don’t need the new functionality.

    I downloaded iTunes 7.7 64bit last night and it works fine with my iPod Touch so should work ok with the iPhone. One thing I didn notice is that when downloading multiple podcasts none of them fail - before every time I downloaded more than one at a time at least one download would fail.

    Apple Software Download automatically downloaded and installed iTunes 7.7 and a new version of Quicktime on my Vista computer. After restarting, I had no web service at all (Firefox 2.0.0.15 and IE); both browsers hang for any URL and eventually show an unreachable error page. I never did try iTunes; I was too freaked out and after messing around with other network stuff (e.g., I was able to ping numerous sites, I released and renewed my DHCP leases, etc.), I performed a System Restore to prior to the 7.7 installation. This resulted in a return of my browsers’ functionality. I tried reloading 7.6.2, but the same problem occurred again, and I need to do a second System Restore. Now I have no version of iTunes on my PC and can’t access my music. Any ideas? Thanks

    sounds like you have something else going on Lewis. you may want to try a virus scan. your scenario seems unlikely to be caused by iTunes, but who knows.

    Hey Nick!

    I’m posting in this thread too - because it seems much more recent than the symbolic link one.

    Amazing work on this. I have a question relating to QuickTime running on my Vista 64 bit machine. I haven’t been able to update my version of Quicktime since version 7.1.6 - every time I install a new version and try to launch it - I get an error saying that it’s only compatible with Windows version 2000 and later. I unchecked the run with Compatible in the Quicktime.exe - but that didn’t work.

    The only thing that has worked is running the symbolic link you mentioned in your article.

    My problem is basically that I can now launch QuickTime through the symbolic link, but most of my programs are trying to launch it through the normal (x86) location - therefore I get an error. Example: I use Maya constantly - and if I try to do a playblast, I get the error. If I have Quicktime open already (from the symbolic link) - it will work, but that’s the only way it seems to do so.

    Is there a way to make my default programs look for the Quicktime through the symbolic link Program Files directory? I tried to make the Run Default Program link to the symbolic link icon - but it doesn’t work the same as launching it from the symbolic link. I would LOVE any suggestion you have.

    Thank you so much!

    - Teri
